The False Face Society

The Native American Iroquois tribe had a 'False Face Society'. Dancers wore masks cut from living trees and manifested various supernatural beings. For tribal people these masks do not 'represent' natural forces, but rather the dancer 'becomes' the force or being it depicts, by wearing the mask.
